Japan has a five-percent consumption tax. This tax is added
to prices of goods and services purchased in Japan.
-Electric current
Although 100 volts is the standard electric current throughout
Japan, 50 hertz cycles are used in eastern Japan, including
Tokyo, and 60 hertz cycles in western Japan, including Nagoya.
-Tipping
Taxi drivers and employees in hotels and restaurants are not
normally tipped in Japan. A 10- to 15-percent service charge
is added to the bill at some hotels and restaurants.

Dial 110 for the police, and 119 for the fire department or
an ambulance. Most public phones have a red button for this

officers at the koban also offer assistance in finding addresses.
