Thomas Ockerse is Professor at Rhode Island School of Design where he heads graduate studies in graphic design. A graduate from Yale (MFA '65) and Ohio State (BFA '63). He is a design consultant and a frequent lecturer in the USA, Europe, and Asia on visual communication and design education. Tom is known for his explorations in language experiments (concrete poetry, bookworks, visual-linguistic systems) and theories in semiotics and concretism applied to design practice and education. His work has won many awards and is represented in publications internationally. He is a partner with The Humanity Initiative (www.humanity.org) and active in other non-profit making organizations.
