Explore methods of communication

The theme of this Congress is VISUALOGUE: Quality of Information. What image does this bring to mind?

The style and format will treat the audience to not only content, but also layers of nuance that are normally barely discernible, the things by which we understand--without speech--one another's deepest thoughts and intents without speech. The format transmits not only language, but also sound, air, even temperature--the aggregate of information from all five senses.

What are your expectations for this Congress? Alternately, what fruit do you expect the Congress to bear?

By refusing to categorize design into its usual boxes of "graphic design", "information design", and so on, understanding the definition of environment as "encompassing" human beings, we will facilitate true communication. With complete crossovers within design, I hope we'll be able to find a viable solution not restricted to individual disciplinary fields.

Please answer the following question in the form of a message directed toward mature professional designers. Clearly, our modern communities are grappling with regional and cultural discord and face serious economic challenges. Given this environment, how might designers make the most vital contribution to society today?

If we look at design from the perspective of human beings and/or the environment, I don't think there are that many answers. A designer is more powerful searching for a way to practice design for society's sake than practicing it for the sake of money or competitive gain.

In light of this answer, what are your thoughts about the meaning of--and possibilities for--the design profession in the society of the future?

If countries, regions or individuals could find uses for design from a societal perspective, making better and wiser use of the abilities of designers, I believe design will become more significant and applied in all areas. People should become aware, and make better use, of a designer's inherent power to crystallize ideas.

What message would you like to convey to the audience in your lecture/presentation?

I would like to explore methods of communication imperceptible to the eye.

We have scheduled an international forum for those who teach in design-related institutions to take place prior to the opening of the Congress. Please give us your point of view on design education. We have to consider design education from an international perspective, and not educate our designers only within the context of Japanese culture.
