A graduate of Tokyo University of Fine Arts & Music, Ishioka has won international acclaim as a graphic designer and art director, a set and costume designer for film and theater and as a director of television commercials and music videos. Her long list of accolades includes an Academy Award for costume design for the film Bram Stoker's Dracula, the Award for Artistic Contribution at the Cannes Film Festival for her production design of the film Mishima, Tony nominations for the sets and costumes of the play M. Butterfly and a Grammy Award for the artwork of Miles Davis' Tutu album. Her more recent activities include the costume design for a production of Richard Wagner's epic opera Der Ring Des Nibelungen at the Netherlands Opera House, costume design for the American film The Cell, direction of a music video for the singer Bjork, and competitive sportswear design for the 2002 Winter Olympics. In the spring of 2002, she completed the costume design for the new Cirque du Soleil production "Varekai." Eiko Ishioka is a laureate of the New York Art Director's Club Hall of Fame, and her work is included in the Museum of Modern Art in New York, among others. Ishioka has published two retrospectives of her work, Eiko by Eiko in 1983, and Eiko on Stage in 2000. Ishioka was born in Tokyo and resides in New York City.
